A collaborative arm provides programmable motion. The useful production task comes from the combination of arm, end effector, fixture, parts presentation and a validated control sequence.

Practical guidance from Desert Horizon. Product examples illustrate a category; capabilities depend on the exact supplied configuration.

Start with the part

Record how the part arrives, how much it varies and how it must be placed. A robot cannot compensate indefinitely for inconsistent presentation without suitable sensing and engineering. A modest fixture or feeder improvement may simplify the task more than buying a more complex arm. Test the most difficult normal part, not only the easiest sample.

Count the complete payload

Include the tool, adapters, cables and handled object when checking the load. Evaluate reach, orientation and the required motion path together. A static reach illustration does not establish that the arm can perform the full process with adequate clearance. Ask the integrator to demonstrate the exact task sequence.

Assess the complete application

Collaborative classification does not establish that every tool and process is suitable for close human interaction. The application must be assessed with its actual loads, pinch points and operating method. Agree acceptance measures for quality, cycle completion and recovery after an interruption. The complete cell is the product you are commissioning.

Three points to take into your project

  • Control part presentation.
  • Include tooling in payload calculations.
  • Validate the complete application.
